Why the Old Testament?

  1. Galatians 3:19-20
  1. The whole story
    1. Have you ever started a movie halfway through?
    2. There’s always something to be said for the climax of a movie
    3. But do you understand all of it?
  2. The New Testament
    1. The climax of the story that God has been writing is Jesus and his resurrection
      1. Hebrews 10:1
    2. It offered us salvation and the opportunity to be sons and daughters of God
      1. Galatians 3:26
    3. But that’s not the whole story
  3. The Old Testament
    1. The promise is made in Genesis 12:1-3
      1. Galatians 3:15-18
    2. The promise is trustworthy because of the one who made that promise
      1. Exodus 34:6-7
    3. But what purpose did it serve?
  4. The Purpose of the Law
    1. Some people think of the Law as “Plan A”, but does God make mistakes?
      1. Gal. 3:19-22
    2. It was never going to save people, but it provided a way for us to show faith
      1. Vs. 23-24
    3. We’re no longer under the Law
      1. Jesus came to bring us the perfect sacrifice so that we don’t need to continue sacrificing
        1. Hebrews 10:1
      2. Just because it’s no longer our “rulebook” doesn’t mean it has no value for us
        1. Galatians 3:29
      3. It was a Guardian or a Teacher
        1. It taught us what sin was so that we could try to avoid it
          1. Romans 7:7-12
        2. It didn’t fail in it’s purpose, we as humans simply failed to uphold it
        3. The Law taught us that we needed forgiveness
      4. We come back to the New Testament
        1. Christ is this climax that was the finishing touch on this story
          1. Galatians 3:25-27
        2. God wrote his story to point us directly to Christ, through the prophets
        3. And we’ll never get the full impact of that climax if we don’t know where it started
